New member, so forgive me if this has been discussed before. I've noticed that Palm's page on Palm Desktop 4.0 for Mac says the following: 'Palm Zire users, please use the version of Palm Desktop software provided with your handheld. ' The Zire is also absent from the list of supported devices, although so is the TT. Does any of this mean that Palm Desktop for the Zire is different than the standard Palm Desktop 4.0 for Mac that is downloadable from the website? I am interested in any differences, no matter how minor. Also, what if you lose your CD? What about upgrades?
I am asking because I recommended the Zire to my Dad on the basis of some specific Palm Desktop functionality that I verified using my local copy. But if the Zire-compatible version is different. Here's the link: Thanks in advance, Gromit. Hello Gromit. The Palm Desktop for Mac OS page that you liked to in your post asks you to use the version of Palm Desktop that is on the Zire m150 disc most likely because the m150 USB drivers have not yet made it into the download version of Palm Desktop.

To the best of my knowledge, that is the only reason for the note on Palm's site. When the next version of Palm Desktop is released, there shouldn't be a problem with using the version from the website.
In the mean time, if you loose the disc, you should be able to order a replacement disc from Palm. The same is true for the Tungsten T m550. The way Palm Desktop works is the same across the various handhelds. There are slight differences between the Macintosh and Windows version, but it is nothing to loose any sleep over. Thanks for the reply, AlanG. Your post makes sense to me and has eased my mind considerably.
I was hoping it was just a temporary driver issue. However, since you brought it up, Palm Desktop for the Mac (derived form Claris Organizer) and Palm Desktop for Windows differ in several important respects and one of them is printing. I am trying to induce a potential user (my Dad) to buy a Palm Zire and move from his current desktop organizer software (InTouch) to Palm Desktop. But a crucial feature of Intouch for him, is its ability to print mailing labels.
As far as I can tell, Palm Desktop for Windows does not do this (directly) and the way Palm Desktop for Mac does it is though its extensive printing options. I have found several Web pages that try to explain how to print mailing labels from Palm Desktop for Windows and most of them involve a dozen or so 'easy' steps of filtering your Address Book information through Word and using Word's mailmerge function.
Not the type of thing I would wish on an enemy, much less a relative. Do I have this right? Update for those who care about printing labels and the Zire experiences of a new user: My Dad is happy as can be with his new Zire and Palm Desktop for Mac. Palm desktop for Mac prints labels even better than his old organizer (InTouch) did.
It automatically centers the address, regardless of the number of lines, and even scales the font to fit if necessary. Now his addresses on his Palm, G4 tower and PowerBook G3 are all in sync. Not bad for a 72-year-old retiree! Best of all, the process was sufficiently simple that I could talk him through the tricky spots even though we live in different states.

Even though I use both the Mac and Windows 2000, and sync my Palm exclusively with my main Windows machine, I am sure glad I steered him toward the Mac/Palm combo when it comes to remote support. He was surprised that his Zire hasn't needed charging after more than a week of use! Palm isn't too clear about this but I was able to verify through this forum that the USB connector provides a slow charge.
